No A/C? Try These Quick Furnace Troubleshooting Tips
It can be extremely stressful to find yourself without air conditioning in your home or business but sometimes the solution to this problem is as easy as ensuring your system has power or swapping out the battery in your thermostat. So don’t panic – try these troubleshooting tips we’ve listed out below.
- Check the electrical panel. Make sure there isn’t a tripped breaker or blown fuse in the main electrical panel or any secondary circuit panels. If the issue stems from here, either turn it off and on to reset the breaker or replace the blown fuse.
- Check the thermostat. Make sure the thermostat is turned to “cool” and set to a temperature that is below room temperature. If the thermostat is not on, swap out the battery.
- Check for power. Make sure the switch in the furnace or air handler and the outdoor condenser are powered on.
- Check the compressor’s capacitor and wires. The capacitor starts both the condenser and the fan. If it has failed, the a/c unit won’t run. Remove the cover and, using a digital multi meter set to “Capacitance,” put one lead on the “Common” terminal and the other lead on one of the other two terminals. The meter should show a number—not “OL” which indicates a short.
If these tips don’t identify and fix your problem, be sure to immediately contact the emergency a/c repair experts at Pat Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning.
